The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

Security Incidents for Tuesday, June 19, 07


(1) The DoD has announced a new death, not previously reported by CENTCOM. Army Reservist Specialist Dustin R. Brisky, 26, of Round Rock, Texas, died in Tallil (presumably the Tallil Air Base near Nasiriyah in southern Iraq) from wounds he received in "an explosion". An article that has appeared on the website for Austin (Texas) station KEYE-TV explains that Brisky was operating a bulldozer, working to clear a hill, when the machine hit a gas line that then exploded.

(2) CENTCOM is reporting the death of a Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier in a small arms fire attack in an eastern part of Baghdad on Monday, June 18th.

(3) Kold news 13 (AP) is reporting the daeth of a soldier, Sergeant Frank Sandoval died yesterday, June 18th. at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, California following an operation to replace a missing piece of his skull. He was wounded in November 2005 in Baghdad when an explosion hit the Humvee he was riding. A piecee of shapnel lodged in his right temple, forcing doctors to remove a piece of his skull.

In Country:
#1: A Yuma soldier who was wounded two years ago during his second tour of duty in Iraq has died following an operation to replace a missing piece of his skull. Sergeant Frank Sandoval died yesterday at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, California, according to his father, Rick Sandoval. Frank had undergone surgery last week to replace the missing skull piece with a prosthetic mold. Frank was injured in November 2005 in Baghdad after he volunteered to be in the lead vehicle on a patrol. He had been manning a .50-caliber machine gun mounted on a Humvee when an explosion from a roadside bomb caused a projectile to become lodged in his right temple, forcing doctors to remove a piece of his skull.


Baghdad:
#1: A Multi-National Division-Baghdad Soldier was killed when a patrol was attacked with small arms fire during combat operations in an eastern section of the Iraqi capital June 18. No other Soldiers were wounded during the attack.

#2: A truck bomb struck a Shiite mosque Tuesday in central Baghdad, killing 75 people and wounding more than 200. The thunderous explosion at the Khillani mosque in the capital's commercial area of Sinak sent smoke billowing over concrete buildings. Gunfire erupted shortly after the blast, which a police officer said went off near the Khillani mosque in the commercial area of Sinak. A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns, said the car that exploded was parked in a lot near the mosque and it damaged the outer wall of the building. Police and hospital officials said at least 75 people were killed and 204 were wounded, adding that the toll could rise as bodies were pulled from the debris.

#3: The bodies of 33 people were found shot in different districts of Baghdad on Monday, police said

#4: A car bomb detonated coordinately in central Baghdad on Tuesday. The first blast took place at around 1:00 p.m. (0900 GMT) when a car bomb went off at the commercial area near the Khallani Square on the east bank of the Tigris River in central the capital, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. At least two people were killed and five others wounded in the bombing, the source added.

#5: An Iraqi soldier was killed and 3 others injured in an IED explosion targeted their patrol in Doura neighborhood south Baghdad around 12,00 pm.

#6: 3 civilians were wounded in an IED explosion in Yarmouk neighborhood downtown Baghdad around 11,00 am.

#7: The Iraqi army killed 15 suspected insurgents and arrested 65 others during the past 24 hours in different districts of Baghdad, the Defence Ministry said

#8: Militants fired a spate of mortar bombs at Baghdad's Green Zone on Tuesday in one of the heaviest attacks in weeks on the heavily fortified compound that houses the U.S. embassy and Iraqi government offices. It was unclear if there were any casualties from the barrage of around 10 mortar bombs. Reuters reporters could see several plumes of smoke rising from the compound on the west side of the Tigris River.

Officials say five of the shells struck near the office of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. One crashed into and area adjacent to the American post exchange store. U.S. soldiers and American contractors in the vicinity of the PX say a building next to the store was hit. It was not immediately known if there were casualties.

#10: An Iraqi soldier was killed and another was injured in an IED explosion targeted their vehicle in Doura neighborhood today after noon.

#11: Three civilians were injured when a mortar shell landed in Al Shaab neighborhood around 7 p.m

#12: Two civilians were killed and 19 were injured when a mortar shell landed in Zafaraniya neighborhood around 7 p.m.

#13: Gunmen killed LC Alaa Abdullah Hamdan an Iraqi borders police officer in Al Shurta tunnel area west of Baghdad today after noon.

#14: Police found 21 dead bodies throughout Baghdad. 2 in Doura, 2 in Ameriyah, 2 in Kadhemiyah, 2 in Amil, 2 in Bayaa, 2 in Shuala, 3 in Adhamiyah, 2 in New Baghdad and 2 in Sadr.


Diyala Prv:
Baquba
#1: The Baqouba operation is being led by Fort Lewis’ 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, with support from units from two other brigades. The American troops are either directly involved in the assault or in supporting efforts on the flanks, along with aircraft and artillery.

#2: The U.S. military said it had killed 22 suspected militants in the early hours of a major offensive against al Qaeda in Iraq around Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, in Diyala province.

Mandli:
#1: "The Chief of Mandli police department, Subhi Mohamadi, died today at the hospital of dangerous wounds he sustained in the blast that destroyed his office last Wednesday," Dr. Shereko Abdallah told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). An unidentified gunman detonated explosives strapped to his body inside the office of Brigadier Subhi Mohamadi, killing and injuring seven policemen

Khalis:
#1: At least six Iraqi soldiers were killed and 16 others were wounded when a group of armed militants ambushed their convoy in Khalis, near Baquba, Iraqi army sources said. As many as 16 of the convoys 30 military vehicles were damaged by fire in the attack.

Gunmen attacked a Kurdish army unit and killed five soldiers and wounded 15 near Baquba on Monday, said Jabar Yawir, a spokesman for the Kurdish Peshmerga militia.


Nasiriyah:
#1: In southern Iraq, police and hospital officials said the death toll reached 22 in clashes that continued into a second day between Mahdi Army fighters and Iraqi security forces in Nasiriyah, about 200 miles southeast of Baghdad. More than 60 people were injured, mostly policemen, authorities said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

#2: Nine mortar shells were launched early Tuesday at Iraqi police headquarters in the town, and three policemen were injured, police said. A vehicle also was destroyed in the shelling, they said.

#3: Two civilians were wounded in another round of shelling in a residential area nearby, police said.


Amara:
#12: Coalition aircraft were called in to strafe fighters who attacked coalition troops in Amara and Majjar al-Kabir, two Shiite cities in the Maysan province bordering Iran, the military said. "During the close air support, at least 20 terrorists were killed and six suspected terrorists were assessed to be wounded by the strafing," the military said. "A vehicle being used by the terrorists as a fighting position was also destroyed by the close air support."


Iskandariya:
#1: Two tribal leaders were killed and their driver wounded by a roadside bomb in the town of Iskandariya, 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.


Basra:
#1: Basra police spokesman said that 3 civilians were killed and a policeman was injured when mortar shells hit the joint accord center in Al Hakimiyah neighborhood downtown Basra city yesterday evening.


Mosul:
#1: Gunmen killed a female student from the University of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

#2: The police said that three other Iraqi civilians were also killed in a booby-trapped car blast in the city of Mosul.


Kirkuk:
#1: Seven Iraqi soldiers were killed and 19 others were wounded on Tuesday in an armed attack on their convoy south of Kirkuk, the Iraqi police said. Police Chief of Al-Aqthia in Kirkuk Brigadier Sarhed Qader told KUNA that unidentified gunmen attacked a convoy of Iraqi soldiers south of Kirkuk leaving seven soldiers killed and 19 civilians wounded


Tal Afar:
#1: A woman and a child were killed by a mortar attack in the town of Tal Afar, 420 km (260 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.


Baaj Region:
#1: In the north-western Baaj region bordering Syria 500 Iraqi police, including 100 border personnel, refused to continue serving following an al-Qaeda threat, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency said.



Afghanistan:
#1: Taliban militants overran a district in southern Afghanistan and are pushing for control of another key area, sparking fierce clashes with NATO and Afghan forces that have left more than 100 people dead over three days, officials said Tuesday. Also late Monday, Taliban occupied Miya Nishin district in neighboring Kandahar province, said provincial police chief Esmatullah Alizai. Authorities were planning an operation to retake the remote area, he said/ Precise casualty figures were not available because of the continued fighting, though two Afghan officials said more than 100 people have been killed, including at least 16 police. A Dutch soldier also died, and three others were wounded.

#2: A Spanish sergeant accidentally shot himself in the right armpit yesterday lunchtime while on patrol with his unit around 40km from the town of Qala i Naw. According to a Defence ministry spokesman, the sergeant's pistol discharged accidentally when the driver of the vehicle the troops were travelling in, performed a sudden and abrupt manoeuvre. The sergeant, whose identity has not been confirmed, was only slightly injured as no major organs were hit. He is now in a conscious and stable condition at a field hospital at the Spanish base in Herat, and has been allowed to contact his family by telephone.
