The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

The DoD is announcing a new death not previously released by CENTCOM..Spc. Christine M. Ndururi died Nov. 6 in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, from a non-combat related illness. No other details were disclosed.

The Chronicle is identifying the death of a former British Marine, Andrew Dancaster, who was working for an un-named English contracting firm. The explosion ripped apart his three-vehicle convoy on Thursday (Nov. 1st.?) and injuring three others

Baghdad:
#1: In the capital, a Shia math teacher was killed in a drive-by shooting in the Sunni-dominated Mansour area, another police officer said. Hanaa Lafta Muhssin, 35, was walking to school at 8 a.m. when gunmen showered her with bullets, the officer requesting anonymity.

#2: A media source from the Islamic Party said on Wednesday that one of the party's members was killed by unknown sniper late on Tuesday in al-Doura neighborhood in southern Baghdad. "Muhannad Mezher al-Shekheli, a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party, was killed by sniper fire while he was riding his car in al-Doura neighborhood in southern Baghdad," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI). He did not provide further details.

#3: At dawn, mortars hit the Red Crescent headquarter at Mansour neighborhood burning 2 vehicles belong to the organization.

#4: At noon, mortars hit the green zone (IZ) in Baghdad having smoke coming from the area with no casualties reported.

#5: Iraqi soldiers killed 10 gunmen and arrested 59 others during the past 24 hours in different parts in Iraq, the Defence Ministry said.

#1: Iraqi soldiers found 17 decomposed bodies early Wednesday north of the Iraqi capital, an Iraqi army officer said. The mass grave was discovered in an area of brush near a school in Hashimiyat, an area west of Baqouba, said Col. Ihsan al-Shimari. Based on the degree of decomposition, al-Shimari said he believed 13 of the corpses had been there more than three months. The remaining four appeared to have been killed a few days ago, he said.


Diwaniya:
#1: A mortar attack has killed two children of a family when it struck their house southeast of Baghdad, wounding three other members. The children, aged four and eight, were members of a Shia family, an officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media. Their father and two brothers were injured in the attack, which occurred around 7 a.m. in Diwaniyah, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) southeast of the capital, police said.


Kut:
#1: in Kut, gunmen broke into the home of an Iraqi soldier and shot him to death, the officer said. Police are investigating the attack, which took place at 3:30 a.m., he said. Kut lies 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad.


Suwayrah:
#1: Gunmen killed an Iraqi soldier in an attack on his house in Suwayra, police said.

#2: A roadside bomb killed two children and wounded four others, including a woman, in Suwayra, 60 km (40 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.


Basra:
#1: The police chief in Iraq's second-largest city said he survived a bomb attack Wednesday — the second attempt on his life in less than a week. Basra Police Chief Maj. Gen. Jalil Khalaf escaped unharmed after his convoy was hit by a roadside bomb early Wednesday. Three of his bodyguards were wounded in the attack, he said.


Northern Iraq:
#1: A FORMER Royal Marine from Sandbach has been killed in a roadside bomb attack in Iraq. Andrew Dancaster, 31, had been working as a contractor for an English firm involved in rebuilding schools and hospitals in the north of the country. An explosion ripped apart his three-vehicle convoy on Thursday, killing him and injuring three others.

#2: U.S. soldiers killed three gunmen and arrested nine others during operations in central and northern Iraq, the U.S. military said.


Kirkuk:
#1: A suicide car bomb attack targeted the office of a Kurdish party in the city of Kirkuk on Wednesday, wounding at least 10 people, the city police chief said. "A suicide car bomb struck the office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK) in Hai al-Askari in southern Kirkuk, some 250 km north of Baghdad," Brigadier Burhan Wasif, the police chief of the city told Xinhua by telephone. The attack wounded at least 10 people, including guards of office, Wasif said, adding that some of them are in critical condition.

A suicide attacker driving a car bomb targeted Wednesday the Kurdistan Democratic Party building in Kirkuk, wounding at least 20 persons including a number of party members, Iraqi police sources said.

#2: Three people were wounded in a mortar attack on a village near Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.


Baaj:
#1: A parked car bomb wounded two Iraqi soldiers in al Ba'aj village near the Syrian border, the local mayor said.



Afghanistan:
#1: (update) The death toll from a suicide blast targeting a group of lawmakers and children rose to 60 on Wednesday, in the deadliest attack in Afghanistan since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. The attack happened Tuesday as the lawmakers were being greeted by children on a visit to a sugar factory in Afghanistan's normally peaceful north. Fifty-four people were buried in Baghlan province, said Mawlawi Sarajuddin, the head of the provincial council, while the bodies of six lawmakers were flown to Kabul.

#2: A provincial councilor of Helmand, western Afghan province, was killed by insurgents on Tuesday evening, local official told Xinhua Wednesday. Haji Mohammad Anwar, governor of Helmand province, said that provincial councilor Haji Deen Mohammad was killed by some insurgents on his way home after praying in a mosque in Lashkar Gah city. "The insurgents escaped after attacked and no one has claimed responsibility for the incident," Anwar added.

#3: Seven passengers were gunned down and three injured as militants attacked two buses in southern Afghan province of Zabul, Outlook quoted a statement released by the Defense Ministry as saying. The casualties came as the militants fired on a passenger coach in Pul-i-Amin area of Shah Joy district, the statement said, also on Tuesday, militants opened fire on another bus in Norak district of the province.

#4: Meanwhile, in the Chaparhar district of eastern Nangarhar province, at least one policeman was killed and eight others injured as a remote-controlled bomb hit their vehicle, said Noor Agha Zwak, a government spokesman.

#5: One civilian was killed by ISAF troops in Kabul when he did not heed warnings to stop advancing in his vehicle toward a foot patrol today. At approximately 11:15 a.m., a vehicle pulled out of traffic and accelerated toward the rear of an ISAF foot patrol. After a verbal warning to stop, the vehicle continued to move toward the patrol. The patrol fired upon the vehicle, hitting the driver in the abdomen. Immediate first aid was given to the driver and an ambulance was called. The driver was taken to the ISAF hospital at Kabul International Airport where he died of his wounds.
