The present-day U.S. military qualifies by any measure as highly professional, much more so than its Cold War predecessor. Yet the purpose of today’s professionals is not to preserve peace but to fight unending wars in distant places. Intoxicated by a post-Cold War belief in its own omnipotence, the United States allowed itself to be drawn into a long series of armed conflicts, almost all of them yielding unintended consequences and imposing greater than anticipated costs. Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. forces have destroyed many targets and killed many people. Only rarely, however, have they succeeded in accomplishing their assigned political purposes. . . . [F]rom our present vantage point, it becomes apparent that the “Revolution of ‘89” did not initiate a new era of history. At most, the events of that year fostered various unhelpful illusions that impeded our capacity to recognize and respond to the forces of change that actually matter.

The AFP is reporting the death of "at least one US fatality" in a the bombing of a US military convoy near Baghdad's highly fortified Green Zone on Wednesday, November 14th. According to US military spokesman Rear Admiral Gregory Smith.
Update--MNF-Iraq is reporting the death of a Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier in a roadside bombing in a central neighborhood of Baghdad on Wednesday, November 14th. Five other soldier were wounded in the attack.

MNF-Iraq is reporting the deaths of Two Multi-National Division – North Soldiers in an explosion in Diyala Province on Tuesday, November, 13th. Four other MND-N Soldiers were wounded.

MNF-Iraq is reporting the death of a Multi-National Corps - Iraq Soldier by gunfire near the city of Mosul on Wednesday, November 14th.

CJTF-82 is reporting the death of a Coalition servicemember of a non-combat related injury on Tuesday, November 13th. The release names Bagram Airfield however no other details were released.

NATO is reporting the death of one ISAF soldier in an IED attack in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, November 14th. A local interpreter was also injured. No other details were released.

The BBC is reporting the Death of a security contractor, Colin Cope, 38, who died near Um Qasr when an IED hit the vehicle in which he was riding in on Saturday, November 10th.


Security incidents:

Baghdad:
#1: The first was a roadside bomb, which blew up next to a U.S. military patrol near the heavily fortified Green Zone, police said. The explosion shook central Baghdad around 8 a.m., and many residents believed it was a truck bomb, because of the magnitude of the blast. The U.S. military had no immediate comment on the incident, which police said occurred in the Salihiyah area on the west side of the Tigris River, across from a security gate leading into the U.S.-guarded Green Zone. Two civilians died and three others were also wounded, police said. There was no report of U.S. casualties.

The last Stryker in the three-vehicle convoy bore the full brunt of the explosion, which scattered fragments of metal across the street. Soon after the blast, a US soldier, cleary shocked, sat with his head in his hands, his weapon at his feet. His colleagues inspected the damage while two of them unloaded rucksacks and ammunition from the back of the 17-tonne armoured troop transport vehicle.

#2: A car bomb targeting a police patrol killed one civilian and wounded six others, including three policemen, in northeastern Baghdad, police said.

#3: Iraqi security forces seized on Wednesday the headquarters of a powerful Sunni Muslim group which has long opposed the U.S. military presence in Iraq, the group said. The security forces which is affiliated to the Sunni Endowment cordoned off and stormed the headquarters of the Association of Muslim Scholars in the Um al-Qura mosque in Baghdad's western neighborhood of Ghazaliyah, the group said in a statement posted on its website. The Sunni Endowment is a state-owned agency that runs the Sunni mosques in Iraq.

#4: Around 9 a.m., a roadside bomb targeted an American patrol in Binouk neighborhood (north east Baghdad).No casualties reported.


Diyala Prv:
#1: Two Multi-National Division – North Soldiers died as a result of an explosion while conducting operations in Diyala Province, Nov. 13. Additionally, four MND-N Soldiers were wounded and evacuated to a coalition hospital.

#2: clashes were under way in two villages , one Shiite and one mixed , east of Baqouba, Diyala's provincial capital. Police said al-Qaida in Iraq used to control both villages, but that U.S. and Iraqi forces forced them out a few weeks ago. About 40 displaced families had begun to return to their homes, when al-Qaida attacked early Wednesday, trying to reclaim the area, police said. Five people were killed , two civilians and three al-Qaida members , and six others injured in the fighting, police said.

Khalis:
#1: Armed clashes erupted on Wednesday morning between Iraqi army forces and citizens from one side and al-Qaeda gunmen from the other in al-Bu Hussein al-Jassem village in al-Salam district in Khalis, north of Baaquba," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity. "Five al-Qaeda gunmen killed and one civilian was injured in the clashes," he added.

#2: One civilian was killed and three more were injured on Wednesday afternoon in a mortar attack on residential neighborhoods in Khalis, a police source said. "Four mortar shells hit a number of residential areas in Habhab district in Khalis, killing a civilian and injuring three," the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under condition of anonymity.


Kut:
#1: Gunmen killed two men in separate incidents in the city of Kut, 170 km (105 miles) southeast of Baghdad, police said.


Iskandariya:
#1: At least two people were killed and six wounded when a suicide bomber wearing a vest packed with explosives infiltrated a meeting of Sunni Arab tribal sheikhs in Iskandariya, a town 40 km (25 miles) south of Baghdad, police sources said. One source said a car bomb also exploded outside the meeting but no other details were available.


Um Qasr:
#1: A former soldier working for a private security firm ArmorGroup has died in a roadside bomb explosion in Iraq. Father-of-three Colin Cope, 38, from Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands, was in a vehicle hit by a bomb near Um Qasr on Saturday. He was leading a team escorting convoys involved in reconstruction work in southern Iraq.


Basra:
#1: A Katyusha rocket, launched from Karmat Ali region in northern Basra, hit the British base at Basra International Airport," the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI)."British forces fired back at the source with six rockets," he added.

#2: One mortar shell landed on a house in Bab Midan region in southern Basra," the same source said."The attack caused no casualties, but some material damage in the house," he noted.


Ishaqi:
#1: An explosive charge went off on Wednesday morning targeting a U.S. vehicle patrol in al-Ishaqi district, Salah el-Din province, destroying a U.S. Hummer, a police source said.

Mosul:
#1: A Multi-National Corps - Iraq Soldier was killed today during military operations near the city of Mosul. The Soldier was mortally wounded by gunfire while providing security to a Police Transitional Team training mission near an Iraqi Police Station.



Afghanistan:
#1: BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – A Coalition servicemember died here today of a non-combat related injury. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The incident is under investigation.

#2: Two soldiers from eastern Iowa are hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds suffered last weekend in an attack in Afghanistan. They were injured when their patrol was attacked by militants in the mountains. The attack killed six Americans and wounded 19.

#3: U.S.-led coalition and Afghan forces clashed with militants in southern Afghanistan and called in airstrikes that killed dozens of insurgents, a spokesman said Wednesday. The NATO-led force, meanwhile, said the number of attacks by militants on remote government facilities have dropped by half this year compared with 2006. Insurgents attacked the joint force with small-arms and rocket-propelled grenades in the Deh Rawood district of Uruzgan province on Tuesday, before fleeing into a civilian home, the coalition said. Dozens of militants were killed during the operation, said Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman. There were no reports of casualties among coalition and Afghan forces.

#4: The Pakistani military claimed on Wednesday it killed at least 16 militants as heavily armed supporters of a pro-Taliban cleric gained control over a third town in the north-western valley of Swat. "We apprehended four militants near the valley's Saido Sharif airport when their armed supporters came for their help but our forces repelled the attack, killing six of them," army spokesman Major General Waheed Arshad told the Dawn news channel. Ten more rebels were killed as helicopter gunships pounded militant positions in the Matta and Shangla areas of the valley, he added. The military strikes came a day after heavily armed Islamic militants gained control of another town in the Swat valley.

#5: A bomb has injured eight Pakistani soldiers in a region of northwest Pakistan where followers of a pro-Taliban cleric have taken control of another town, reports say. The bomb hit a military convoy near Batkhela, a town in the Swat Valley, where fighters loyal to cleric Maulana Fazlullah have been battling troops since July, a military statement said. It provided no details.

#6: One ISAF soldier was killed in southern Afghanistan today when he was caught in an IED explosion during a routine patrol. A local interpreter was also injured and is being treated at an ISAF medical facility.
